How not to do Twitter advertising…

With the Premiership season starting back this weekend, expect plenty of in stream Twitter advertising if you’re a sports loving male this weekend.

Twitter allows brands a huge variety of targeting options, from picking up keywords that accounts have previously tweeted, to contextual targeting based upon accounts they follow etc. It’s an advertising tool that’s growing in popularity in Ireland, and, for my mind, far more impactful than Facebook ads.

However, as with all advertising, a good copywriter and a strong call to action is key.

Good examples I’ve seen recently include an inbound marketing brand promoting a tweet around a free whitepaper download, Paddy Power offering free bets for the Lions & Setanta Sport offering a good deal on renewing your package.

When brands get it wrong though, they really get it wrong. I got this in my stream last night from AOL. Looks like some media company account exec/Twitter sales exec will be getting a talking to on Monday morning due to this epic link fail!
